Directions (11-20): Read the following story carefully
and answer the questions given. Certain words/
phrases have been given in bold to help you locate
them while answering some of the questions.
Once upon a time, there lived a king. He was a very
kind man and he looked after the welfare of his
people. He saw to it that all the people in his
kingdom were happy. The king had a very able Prime
Minister. He consulted the Prime Minister on all
administrative matters. As years went by, the Prime
Minister became old and the king began to search
for another one.
After a long search, the king, at last, entrusted the
old Prime Minister with the task of finding a capable
man to take his place. The Prime Minister issued a
proclamation and called a meeting of all the pundits
in the kingdom. He then selected the four most
learned pundits. The Prime Minister wanted to
choose the best of the four Pundits as the new Prime
Minister. He, therefore, decided to put them
through a test. He asked each of the four pundits to
sit in a separate room. Each room had two doors.
The Prime Minister then went to teach pundit and
said, "The room has two doors." I will close both the
doors and latch them, but I will lock one door from
inside and the other door from outside without using
a key, you should open the door from inside and
come out. The pundit who succeeds in coming out
first will be made the Prime Minister.
Out of the four pundits, three were perplexed. Each
of them thought, "How can the lock be opened
without the key? If it cannot be opened, 1 will not be
able to open the door and go out. "Thinking thus,
the three pundits spent the whole night studying
their books in order to find a solution to the
problem. But unfortunately, none of them found
one. The fourth pundit, however, had a deep sense
of reasoning. He had a rational and an analytical
mind. He pondered over the problem for a long
time. "There is no way I can open the lock without
the key. Therefore, I think, there is some trick in the
lock itself. Let me check the latch and the lock," he
thought. Thinking thus, the fourth pundit went to
the door. He examined the lock and the lash
minutely.
Suddenly, he realised that the door was on the latch!
The door was closed but not latched. The lock simply
hung from the latch. The pundit quickly opened the
door and came out of the room. He then presented
himself before the Prime Minister. The old Prime
Minister heartily welcomed the pundit and
honoured him. The king appointed the pundit as the
new Prime Minister.
