  • Offer for THESIS CIFREin Software Engineering - University of Montpellier (LIRMM)

  • Title of the thesis: Towards the Automatic Identification of Optimal Configurations of CI Pipelines / Software Development Projects CD: Symbolic, Meta-Heuristic and Statistical Approaches.

  • As part of a collaboration between the LIRMM laboratory(http://www.lirmm.fr/)and the company Go2Scale(https://go2scale.io/fr/accueil/),we propose theCIFRE thesis, the elements of which are described below.

  • Keywords: Software engineering, DevOps, CI/CD pipeline, workflow, configuration, variability, feature model, optimization, meta-heuristic approach, symbolic approach, statistical approach, machine learning, static analysis, textual analysis.

  • Background and Objectives: DevOps is an approach to bringing together two key functions of an application development company's CIO. On the one hand, the developer teams and on the other the system operating teams. Initially, the activities and objectives of the "Ops" and "Dev" responded to two different needs. For some (Dev), the core business is to propose innovations and changes, in order to meet new customer needs. For the others (the Ops), the purpose of their activity is to maintain in operational conditions as well as guarantee the stability of the existing platform. Changes requested by one team necessarily impact the activities of the other.

  • The "Dev" constantly modify the product. The "Obs" want stability. The relationship to time, cost and quality also differ, and can become a source of conflict. Generally, this situation creates silos that put a brake on the overall process of product realization. One of the components of DevOps is the implementation of CI/CD pipelines to automate many tasks in the life cycle of a software, such as functional tests, quality tests, security checks, packaging, or deployment.

  • The problem is that the implementation of this workflow does not go without constraints.

  • The objective of this CIFRE thesis is to study the problem of automatic (or quasi-automatic) identification of valid and optimal CI/CD pipeline configurations. It is a question of being able to propose solutions allowing, for a given software project, to always provide the best CI /CD configuration. These solutions must take into account the diversity of execution platforms, the technologies used, the project models, the criteria to be optimized, etc. They must be suitable for all major platforms such as Gitlab Runner, Github Action, Jenkins, Circle CI and Travis CI.

  • Administrative aspects: 1. Location of the CIFRE thesis: Laboratoire LIRMM, Université de Montpellier/CNRS, Montpellier, France & Entreprise Go2scale (Montpellier, France).

  • 2. Deadline for receipt of applications: August 31, 2021.
