• PhD position open at Université Côte d'Azur, CNRS, Inria, I3S, France, on natural language counter-argumentation against online

  • disinformation -- The context -- Online social media platforms try to limit the virality of disinformation propagated for example by content moderation. While these measures show some effectiveness in limiting the spread of misleading or false information, a big problem still remains unsolved: identifying disinformation and reporting its status to users is not enough to counter it.

  • The aim of the PhD programme is to address this urgent need by designing intelligent (semi-)automated ways to generate counter-arguments to combat the spread of disinformation online. The idea is to avoid the undesirable effects of content moderation, such as overblocking, when it comes to online disinformation, and directly intervene in the discussion (e.g. Twitter feeds) with text arguments intended to counter fake content as soon as possible and prevent it from spreading further. The idea is to get quality counter-arguments while reducing effort and supporting human fact checkers in their daily activities.

  • The thesis (3 years) is funded by the ANR ATTENTION project "Generating counter-arguments to fight against disinformation on the Web".

  • In the framework of the funded ANR DELTWINCO project, the CRIStAL Laboratory in Lille recruits a PhD student in AI with applications to renewable power systems (knowledge of power systems is not required):

  • Deep Learning-Based digital twin for power electronics converters

  • 1. Thesis positioning, objectives and challenges The thesis is funded in the framework of the French National Research Agency (ANR) under the Acronym DELTWINCO, standing for Deep Learning Digital Twin for Power Converters. The project is related to the development of Renewable Energies and their introduction in a power grid. New equipments (e.g. wind turbines) are connected to the grid by power electronics devices known as power converters. The penetration rate of these power converters is a challenge to the Power network managers as there is a risk of stability, hence the dynamical behavior should be checked online.

  • The main aim of the project DELTWINCO is to develop a digital twin based on Artificial Intelligence methodology in order to achieve the control of performance of these converters.

  • Since the application of artificial intelligence has never been implemented for this control of performance, several fundamental breakthroughs have to be achieved [1,2].

  • 2. Main research steps - Identification of the Digital twin for a single converter : In a first step, the digital twin will be developed by using data extracted from an offline existing simulated model of the converter. Also, the nonlinear behavior (different operating mode) will have to be taken into account. One can think of recurrent autoencoders [3].

  • - Relation between the digital twin of a converter and the control of its performance. Assuming that the digital twin has been designed, it will then be used to control the dynamic behavior of a converter in operation. The digital twin will have to warn when the measured dynamic behavior will diverge too much from the expected one. A methodology has to be developed in order to quantify precisely when the divergence between both behaviors is considered as acceptable or not.

  • - Design a digital twin for the modelling of several power electronic converters connected to the same node of the grid The two first steps will consider a single converter. However, in case of wind farm or Photovoltaic Power plant, a lot of converters can be used in parallel and connected to the same point of common connection on the transmission grid. Another level of Digital Twin will be developed in order to propose an aggregate model of this complex system. One thinks for example of Graph Networks which are a specific form of neural networks based on graphs that allow to capture the dynamic behavior of a complex system, and the operation of interacting components [4,5]

  • 3. Supervision and Team work The PhD student will be supervised by Jean-Yves Dieulot, Associate Professor at the University of Lille (CRIStAL Lab), and Professor Pascal Yim, Professor at Ecole Centrale de Lille, specialists in Control, Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning. The consortium also members of L2EP, Power Electronics Laboratory in Lille (Professor Xavier Guillaud, project leader, Dr. A. Bruyère, Dr. F. Colas) who are specialists of Power Networks. A well-known Power Lab from Denmark also participate. Finally, a post-doc will be hired for all power electronics and real-time validation aspects of the algorithms found by the PhD student.

  • The main role of the PhD student is to develop deep-learning algorithms tailored to the design of the digital twin. The student should have very good skills in learning algorithms, neural networks and be easy with programming with Python and or Matlab.
